Nothing Gold

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay. -Robert Frost

Everything's Coming Up Roses

(I mean that to be a really good thing, but I suppose it would be annoying if you'd planted vegetables.)

Anyway, a lot of things seem to be going right and I'm feeling extremely happy. Liz got a job (congratulations btw!), we elected our first black president, I'm having a little girl and I found out today that my friend Heather is pregnant. She had one failed round of IVF and this was her last chance. Also my mom has what she calls "a real grown up job" and is finally making enough to actually live on. And my sister was able to move to Seattle. I think I'm going to be able to say that 2008 was a good year.

The downside to feeling so happy though, is that I'm not enjoying my favorite music as much. Wilco and The National are what I'd been listening to a lot. They're still great, but the lyrics just don't give me that full heart feeling they do when I'm feeling sad, yet hopeful like I'm used to feeling. That's okay. It's prolly worth it.

I read online that the guys in The National are socialists. I think they want to steal your money and give it to John Mayer.

Just got back from a road trip to Philly with some of the crew - but I wanted to say: you being happy makes me very happy indeed. :-) And wooo-hooo on Levi's little sister on the way!! :-D God bless, guys.

Maggie, you crack me up! I think even if I planted veggies, I'd love to see roses coming up. :) Well, unless I was starving? Anyway, ha!
Oh, man, a little girl. Hee! Yeah, it's interesting to me how many of our friends have one flavor or the other. Very cool that you'll have a 'set.'
As far as Obama goes -- great post. He DOES seem like a very good man, and I've been really cheered so far to see how much emphasis he's putting on bipartisanship, and cherry-picking the best ideas no matter where they come from. That really bodes well. This is neither here nor there, but there's something about his voice that really makes me feel comforted and as if we're in safe hands. (as I've said, I've really never disliked him; just the hoopla.) I don't know why, but I'm big on voices.
On the subject of 'blackness' ... well, I feel like this one's still debatable. I know what you mean about our country's history, but I have a hard time seeing him (and thus the triumph this means for our country) in the same light as I would a man whose mom wasn't a white woman from Kansas, you know? Maybe that's a really small, practically moot point, though.
